One of the key features of outstanding leadership is where a leader’s behaviour is absolutely consistent with their stated values.
Unfortunately, we have all seen, or worse, worked for, leaders where their behaviour falls far short of what they proclaim to be important.
In their way leaders are no different from any of us – for we each in our own way carry around a mental model of how we think we will behave in any given circumstance – but so often fail to live up to it. It is this model that we share with other people and to which we pledge allegiance. Yet when we look at our actual behaviour, especially in extremis, we appear to be conforming to a completely different set of values.
