Drawing (eliciting) the best out of people

At a simplistic level a leader has two options in terms of their responsibility for enhancing the practice of other people.

The first of these is the option of providing explicit, direct and specific advice, which, if followed to the letter, will lead to an improvement in performance – for the purposes of this article I’ll call this ‘Command’.

The second option is to leave others to work things out for themselves by observing, reading and accessing other development opportunities – I’ll call this ‘Abdication’.
