DO NO HARM

It’s a common misperception that the phrase “Do no harm” is part of the original Hippocratic Oath that guides the ethical behaviour of the medical profession.

In actual fact the phrase never featured in Hippocrates’ version of the oath, although he did use something similar in ‘The Epidemics’.

“The physician must … have two special objects in view with regard to disease, namely, to do good or to do no harm”.

I actually think the above is a better rendition of the concept than the more simplistic ‘do no harm’ or, as it sometimes represented ‘First, do no harm’.
